Art History in Argentina: A Seminar Series

Join us for a captivating three-session seminar on the rich and diverse history of Argentine art, presented chronologically from its origins to the present day. This essential course offers an overview of key artists, movements, and cultural shifts that have shaped the nation’s artistic landscape. Whether you’re a seasoned art enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this series provides a comprehensive introduction to Argentine art history.

The course will be taught by Fernando Guibert, an accomplished artist and lecturer with degrees in Fine Art and Modern and Contemporary Art from Buenos Aires. He has extensive experience teaching History of Art, painting, and etching in both Argentina and the UK, with exhibitions and works held in prestigious collections worldwide.

Seminar Details:

  • Dates: Saturdays, 22nd February, 22nd March, and 26th April, 2025
  • Time: 10:30 AM – 12.00pm (UK time)
  • Format: Three sessions, each lasting 90 minutes
  • Language: All sessions taught in English.
  • Location: Online (Zoom link will be emailed to attendees prior to each session.)
  • Cost: The ticket price covers all 3 sessions and is valid for one online access. For example, if two people are sharing a single device, only one ticket is required. Please ensure you list all attendees during checkout when prompted, so we have a complete record of everyone participating.

Course Outline:

Session 1: Saturday 22nd February: Foundations of Argentine Art
Explore the roots of Argentine art, starting with Pre-Hispanic Art, Spanish Baroque, traveler artists, the colonial period, and the 19th century.

Session 2: Saturday 22nd March: Argentine Forerunners and European Influences
In this session we will delve into Argentine forerunners, European influences and key artists.

Session 3: Saturday 26th April: Modernity and Contemporary Movements
Our final session will cover modernity, new figuration, abstract artists, contemporary movements and key artists.

Course Approach:

Throughout the seminar we will identify key artists and movements and we will focus on four key elements for analysing artworks:

  • Space
  • Composition
  • Form
  • Content

Additionally, we will engage in comparative analysis of artistic examples to deepen our understanding of how art in Argentina has evolved over time.

The session will be interactive with time allocated to Q&As, we encourage all attendees to turn on cameras and actively participate throughout the seminar.
