The Hispanic Anglosphere @ Argentina

On 15th May, we welcomed Dr. Graciela Iglesias-Rogers and Dr. Juan Neves-Sarriegui to the Anglo Argentine Society to deliver a talk on the Hispanic-Anglosphere in relation to Argentina, expanding on the findings of the book, The Hispanic-Anglosphere from the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Century – An Introduction, ed. Graciela Iglesias-Rogers (London: Routledge, 2021). Graciela and Juan traced the entangled histories between the Anglophone and Hispanophone communities, before inviting the audience to share their stories and thoughts. We concluded our discussions over wine and empanadas.

The Hispanic-Anglosphere is an international research network funded by the AHRC and the University of Winchester in partnership with the National Trust Tyntesfield and the Centre of American Studies at the Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez in Chile that studies individuals, networks and communities who made the British Isles a crucial hub for the global Hispanic world and a bridge between Spanish Europe, Spanish Africa, Spanish Asia and the Americas from the eighteenth to early twentieth centuries. The project’s website invites members of the public to suggest new lines of research or to contribute relevant information to the project, including its growing database of individuals from the Anglo-Hispanic world.

The talk took place at the Argentine Ambassador’s Residence and we were welcomed by Minister Gonzalo Ortiz de Zárate, in charge of the Cultural Section of the Embassy of Argentina in the UK. We wish to thank both academics, the Embassy of Argentina, and all present, among whom were authorities from Canning House and the British Spanish Society.

The book may be purchased here, with some chapters currently available via open access. Click here to access the speakers’ PowerPoint presentations.
